So I put this book on my "to read" list months ago but never got to it. To be frank, I was turned off by the name of the book alone and thought, "what good book could be called 'Juicy'"???? This surely will be to "hood" for me! I mean seriously, Juicy??? And when I found out the main character's name was Juicy I just knew this would stay on my "to read" list forever because no civilized author would name their main character Juicy!!!! They would not. Nope.I stand corrected. *puts crow in mouth and chews*
If you've read Pepper Pace's other works you know that she takes externally flawed characters and molds them into something beautiful to behold. Take "beast" in the book Beast. Or in this book's case, a homeless, "mentally ill" man, and a woman who's birth name is Juicy! Juicy! Externally these are unappealing characters-- but internally, the appeal is so great it causes you to say, "well damn, do I need to check my unconscious bias (and some conscious biases) surrounding people with trash names and those I would deem less fortunate?" Or "Damn, maybe I really am judgmental as all hell "
How do you make a homeless, mentally ill man sexy and desired? How do you take a woman named Juicy, aka Juice, seriously?? I don't how Pepper does it but she does this work extremely well.
I love how she develops these characters.
Both Troy and Juicy were on a tumultuous journey and it was an thrilling adventure to go through it with them. There wasn't much predictability in the book (which is rare!) and the wrap up. Can we just spend a second on the wrap up. Pepper Pace needs to give a masterclass (OWN style--hey Oprah!) in how to wrap up a novel. Poor endings are my biggest pet peeve in reading. Nothing is worse than spending hours-days of your precious (and let's not forget your dollars) reading a book to have it bomb or dud out at the end. It's just like your lover who prematurely ejaculates. Your left feeling worked up and disappointingly unfulfilled. Ugh! Uggghhhhhhhhh! It's the worse and a waste of my time, energy and patience!
So, the wrap up for this book was great. I felt extremely fulfilled with the conclusion of the story and epilogue.
The only gripe I have with this book, and others of Pepper's, is grammatical and spelling errors. It's so frustrating to have them in such a good book ALL THE TIME! At this point I volunteer as tribute to beta edit these novels. Come through spell check!!!

i love that Pepper writes characters with different styles. only issues i had with this story are that Juicy and Troy both have their stupid moments. I'm glad that their relationship builds up as opposed to just being "love at first sight" or the day after they meet theyre already getting down or some similar unrealistic crap.
problem with the book really just comes towards the end of the book where both characters just kind of just make super rash decisions that were written poorly. The conflict could have been avoided if written different.
If you want to know, read past the spoiler alert.

So Juicy gets pregnant and Troy leaves to go get help putting himself in a mental institution near his parents place to get medication for seizures and stuff because he doesnt wanna be messed up for his kid. He's gone for like 3 weeks and Juicy takes it the wrong way that he left because he didnt want her or the baby and she ignores ALL of his calls that he leaves her explaining what he did and why. then he comes back and she's pregnant sick and she lashes out at him for no reason basically besides insecurity so shes dumb for being angry for no reason. Troy is dumb because his whole reasoning for choosing to be homeless as he explains at the beginning is because he didnt want to be on meds because they made him feel weird and sick, but he ends up going on meds at the end so that he can be better. granted, they are different meds, but the idea is still the same. his attitude about them is the only thing that changes.
I recommended this story if your looking for something that has substance besides love. These two characters fell in love with each other but I can honestly say the reader got a chance to learn both characters as they worked on themselves. I found even though the story had very serious subject matter I found myself laughing at a lot of seasons especially the banter between juicy and Troy when they first met.
Although having said that they're still was scenes where I kind of was like huh? Anybody who reads a pepper pace story knows that the hero and heroine fall in love pretty fast that's just her mo. Except in wheels of steel. But anywho I feel like as strong willed as juicy was a strong black woman that did not like white people she slept with Troy within a few days of knowing him. That part I felt was very rushed. They were such a unlikely pair I think they should have took more time.
I will honestly say I wish I had more sex scenes but I never had a point when I was reading that I felt like I wanted to put it down. 👌🏾
this book could have been so much better. I love the ir genre and I really REALLY appreciate that this book wasn't about a billionaire who saves an angry black girl who underneath isn't as strong as she could be. In juicy both Hh needed to borrow strength from each other which I really liked. A much needed change. Unfortunately that's about the best I can say about this book. The writing style itself just wasn't that great. Time, for instance, just kept jumping and it was hard to tell if days had passed or weeks. This book just didn't work for me, I don't want to dissuade anyone from trying out a book, but if I could do it again i wouldn't have bought it.
